written by Lewis Allen
originally sung by Billie Holiday

Bösendorfer & Vocals — Tori Amos

When she was a child, Tori Amos listened a lot to the Billie Holiday records of her mother’s vinyl collection so it’s no surprise she chose to cover one of her songs on the Cornflake Girl special UK edition also featuring covers of Jimi Hendrix and Joni Mitchell.

In interviews, she told that she recorded the song very early in the morning, at 5:30.

"I recorded something at 5:30 in the morning —’ Strange Fruit’, Billie Holiday — for a British import. And the reason is because I needed, I needed that [Tori sings] Southern leaves, bear strange fruit. You have to have a certain quality to your voice.”

Alex: Gives that reedy sound.

"Yeah, that I can’t get umm, later on in the afternoon. But there are things I can’t record in the mornings." (Alex Bennett Morning Show, August 30, 1994)
