Something – Rantz and Zane

Tori explained to Time Out in February 1994 that she developped the tunes of the song then “built rythms to go around them.”“Just the whole idea of having an acoustic piano with an industrial-type rhythm was very exciting to me. It was like bringing two different cultures together.” For the rythm part, she and Eric Rosse recorded the footsteps of her friend Rantz Hoseley and one of his buds to include in the mix. When interviewed by the fanzine Little Blue World in Spring 2004, Rantz revealed that it was one of his best memories of him witnessing Tori’s creative process. “The other time that sticks out is when I traveled to New Mexico while she and Eric were recording UtP, and getting to watch them record ‘Space Dog,’ having them record myself and my friend Zaine’s Doc Martens-clad feet shuffling across the concrete floor to be used in the rythm part of the song, and just the energy that was there, watching them lay down takes for the vocal lines.”

In an interview for Virtual Guitar in October 1999, guitarist Steve Caton revealed that the “wah-wah on ’Space Dog’ was one of the first things that came to me. I knew I would play that part weeks before recording it.”
