"Cooling" was supposed to be on Boys for Pele but didn’t fit. Then Tori tried to put it on From the Choirgirl Hotel, but it didn’t work either so she released it as a B-Side on the Spark single. About that choice, she commented in the A Piano booklet: "’Cooling,’ in retrospect, probably should have been on Boys for Pele, but I think maybe it was one of those things I wasn’t ready to put out on an album. You can’t get away from the fact that when you put a song on an album it’s out there for everyone to judge and critique. There have been certains songs, and I can’t tell you why, that I just haven’t wanted to expose. Maybe it’s a little too close to the bone. But for whatever reason, you just feel as if you don’t want everybody to make a comment on it."

It is one of Tori’s favorite songs and she plays it very often. "When I’m playing ’Cooling’ in a show you know it’s either because I’m having a really tough day and it’s the thing that’s getting me through or I’m having the best time of my life and that’s why I want to play ’Cooling.’" [1]
