Comparative Lyrics

Stille Nacht, Heilige Nacht (Silent Night, Holy Night)

Wednesday 17 August 2011, by Cécile Desbrun

"Stille Nacht, heilige nacht" ("Silent Night, Holy Night") from Tori’s seasonal record Midwinter Graces is the cover of the traditional 19th century carol of the same name (most often referred to as "Silent Night" ). Tori basically didn’t change the lyrics but based her cover on two different English translations of the carol, which you can find below. She shifted some of the verses and edited out some others.

Here, you can compare Tori’s version with the lyrics of the original carol.
For better appreciation, I used different colors.
Black : the lyrics are the same as the original carol
[rouge] Red : lyrics that have been left out by Tori in her version [/rouge]

"Stille Nacht, heilige nacht" ("Silent Night, Holy Night")

Silent night, holy night
All is calm, all is bright
Round young virgin, Mother and child
Holy infant so tender and mild
Sleep in heavenly peace
Sleep in heavenly peace

Silent night, holy night
When thou smil’st, love-beams bright
Pierce the darkness all around
Son of God, thy birth doth sound
Our salvation’s hour
Our salvation’s hour

Silent night, holy night
Sleeps the earth, calm and quiet
Lovely child, now take thy rest
On thy mother’s gentle breast
Sleep in heavenly peace
Sleep in heavenly peace
Just sleep in heavenly peace

Silent Night (translated by John Freeman Young)

Silent night! Holy night!
All is calm, all is bright
round yon Virgin Mother and Child,
Holy infant so tender and mild,
sleep in Heavenly peace!
sleep in Heavenly peace!

Silent night! Holy night!
[rouge] Shepherds quake at the sight;
glories stream from Heaven afar,
Heavenly hosts sing Alleluia,
Christ, the Saviour, is born!
Christ, the Saviour, is born! [/rouge]

Silent night! Holy night!
[rouge] Son of God, Love’s pure light
radiant, beams from Thy Holy face,
with the dawn of redeeming grace,
Jesus, Lord at Thy birth,
Jesus, Lord at Thy birth. [/rouge]

Alternate version (as reproduced in The New Oxford Book of Carols)

Silent night! Holy night!
Sleeps the earth, calm and quiet;
Lovely Child, now take thy rest:
On thy mother’s gentle breast
Sleep in heavenly peace!
Sleep in heavenly peace!

Silent night! Holy night!
When thou smil’st, love-beams bright
Pierce the darkness all around;
Son of God thy birth doth sound
Our salvation’s hour!
Our salvation’s hour!

Silent night! Holy night!
[rouge] From the heaven’s golden height
Christ descends, the earth to free;
Grace divine! By thee we see
God in human form!
God in human form! [/rouge]

Silent night! Holy night!
[rouge] God above at that sight
So with fatherly love rejoice,
While earth’s peoples, with once voice,
Jesus their brother proclaim!
Jesus their brother proclaim!

Silent night! Holy night!
Adam’s sin damned us quite,
But the Son, to set us free
From the Father’s stern decree,
Now in his mercy is born!
Now in his mercy is born!

Silent night! Holy night!
Shepherds first with delight
Heard the angelic ‘Alleluia!’
Echoing loud, both near and far;
‘Jesus, the Saviour, is here!
Jesus, the Saviour, is here!’ [/rouge]
